Afterschool Special Needs Educator

Boys & Girls Club of Charlottetown Afterschool Program

Responsible to:          Site Supervisor and Program Director

Nature of Work:        To be responsible for specified members with special needs in the implementation of our daily afterschool program in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club of Charlottetown’s stated purpose and within the general policies and mission as formulated by the Executive Director and Board of Directors. He/she will be responsible for accompanying and assisting special needs members in the implementation of daily activities, ensuring safety, communicating with members, coworkers and supervisors, maintaining appropriate logs, following proper procedures, policies and practices carried out by the Boys & Girls Club of Charlottetown.

Illustrative Examples of Work:

  • Provide assistance to members of our daily afterschool program who have special needs as specified by the Programs Director (this may include one-to-one assistance or assistance within the group)
  • Accompany, assist and actively supervise special needs members during the afterschool program. Work to integrate special needs members (when appropriate) in program activities such as snack, reading time, arts/crafts, games, sports, science experiments etc.
  • Interact with and display positive role modeling for all members
  • Ensure proper parent communication is implemented and maintained
  • Ensure proper communication with other staff members and supervisors is implemented and maintained
  • Keep detailed logs of daily interactions with members, incidents & accidents

Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of the concepts relating to children and youth programs, services, behaviors, and other related activities
  • Knowledge of child development and special needs children with a variety of physical and intellectual disabilities and behavioral or other learning challenges
  • Demonstrated understanding of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work environment


  • Experience working with special needs children with a variety of physical and intellectual disabilities and behavioral or other learning challenges
  • Training and/or Diploma in a related field of study such as Human Services or Child and Youth Care Worker (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training
  • Current Criminal Record Check
